Meet Juan, a client of The Village’s housing program, specifically the Time-Limited Subsidy Program, or TLS. For people experiencing homelessness like Juan, TLS provides short-term rental assistance and supportive services to help them secure permanent housing quickly and successfully. In addition to housing, clients receive trauma-informed, harm reduction–based care and ongoing support.

Here is Juan’s story, in his own words.

After being released from prison at age 24 having gone in at 18 years old, I came home with nothing to my name. All I had were a few bars of soap, some clothes, and my Bible. At that moment, I knew it was completely up to me to rebuild my life. I would stay strong, stay hopeful, and use every resource available to me. I attended every resource fair I could find, determined to create a new path. That’s when I was connected with the Volunteers of America (VOA), which eventually led me to The Village Family Services.

Through The Village, an incredible opportunity was presented to me, one that allowed me to experience stability as a tenant and begin building a foundation for my future. Thanks to The Village, doors have opened for me that I never thought I deserved or could even reach. This program has not only helped me find direction but also taught me how to be successful and truly independent.

I also want to take a moment to recognize the caseworkers and supervisors who dedicate themselves to helping youth like me. I know their work isn’t easy. They face challenges every day but their compassion, patience, and belief in us makes all the difference. I am forever grateful for their service and their compassion! If I was able to stay strong and keep hope alive through my journey, then I truly believe the next young person can do it too. No matter how hard life gets, there’s always a way to move forward when you choose to believe in yourself and accept the help of those who genuinely care Doors will open.

We are grateful and proud to be a part of Juan’s journey home.
