The individuals who seek supportive services and resources from The Village come from a wide variety of backgrounds, have diverse life experiences and are all in different points in their journeys toward stability. But they all found their way through the doors of our Drop-In Center, and we are proud to be a small part of their stories and are grateful that they’ve allowed us to share their stories.Â
Adrian
Julio – one of the members of our street outreach team and one of the first faces that many of the youth see at The Village – first connected with Adrian through a coworker who had received one of our outreach flyers a few weeks prior. At the time, Adrian was sleeping behind a convenience store and occasionally staying on his coworker’s couch.
Recognizing Adrian’s urgent need for stability, our street outreach team was able to place him in an interim housing program in Chatsworth. During their recent conversations, Adrian shared his aspirations, most notably, his desire to return to school once he secures permanent housing. Just a few weeks ago, Adrian proudly shared that he has saved enough money to begin searching for his own apartment. Our team is now actively supporting him in touring units and preparing for the next step in his journey toward independence.
Sophia and Joseph
While conducting outreach in the Sylmar area, our street outreach team met Sophia and Joseph, an unhoused couple living in an encampment under a freeway ramp. Â They were in urgent need of shelter and basic supplies. Our team responded immediately by providing them with a tent, sleeping bags, blankets, and hygiene kits, and invited them to visit our Drop-In Center.
A few days later, they arrived at the center and shared that all their belongings had been stolen by gang members. Once again, our outreach team provided them with essential supplies to help them get through the crisis. Within a week, our team was able to successfully place both into shelter on the same day. Since then, Sophia and Joseph have continued to engage with our services, including meeting with our employment specialist and accessing therapy through the Drop-In Center.
Their story highlights the importance of rapid response, consistent support, and the power of compassionate outreach in helping individuals move from survival to stability.
Julia
Julia walked into our Drop-In Center visibly afraid and in shock. She had just run away from home and was experiencing homelessness for the first time. She shared that her parents were trying to force her into marriage and pressuring her to quit school, a situation that left her feeling trapped and unsafe. Despite her love for her family, she knew she needed to leave to protect her future.
The Drop-In Center staff acted quickly and was able to place Julia in a shelter the same day, located outside the Valley. They remained in close contact with her, and as soon as there was an opening at our own shelter, our team helped transition into The Village’s Chatsworth housing facility, where she has been for the past six months.
Since then, she has made remarkable progress: she has re-enrolled in school, started working part-time, visited her consulate to get her paperwork in order, and consistently attending therapy at our Drop-In Center, and completed our Blues Program, a special program offered by our mental health staff that addresses how to cope with depression and anxiety before problems become more serious.
In a recent conversation, Julia expressed feeling optimistic and proud of all she’s accomplished. Her journey is a powerful example of how timely intervention, safe shelter, and ongoing support can help youth escape harmful environments and begin building a brighter future.
E.M.
Five months ago, Village staff met E.M, a young participant at our Drop-In Center who was struggling with homelessness and substance abuse. He came in seeking basic supplies like clothing, a sleeping bag, and a tent, but more importantly, he expressed a deep desire to get clean and turn his life around.
After a problem-solving conversation, we connected him with a substance abuse recovery program in Lancaster. We transported him to his intake appointment, and he was welcomed into a supportive home environment designed to help youth overcome addiction.
Recently, we saw him again at the Drop-In Center, and it was clear that he was healthier, more confident –Â and full of gratitude. He thanked The Village for helping him get into the program and shared that getting a fresh start in Lancaster was the best decision he could have made.
His case manager, also a Village staff member, described him as a phenomenal role model for other participants in the group, a message that made him smile and feel proud of his progress.
His story is a powerful reminder of how timely intervention, compassionate outreach, and access to recovery services can transform lives.
