Youth Homelessness Outreach in Los Angeles Creates Pathways to Stability

A few months ago, an unhoused youth named Manuel walked into the Drop-In Center carrying more weight than anyone should have to. He learned about the Center through a flyer he found at the North Hollywood Library. That single piece of paper became the first step toward change.

When Manuel first met the street outreach team, he appeared withdrawn and depressed. During intake, he opened up about the hardships that had shaped his life. His mother died from cancer when he was a teenager. A few years later, his father was deported. Like many unhoused young people, Manuel found himself alone through circumstances beyond his control, without parental support or close family connections in Los Angeles. He began couch surfing with friends and eventually spent several nights sleeping in North Hollywood Park.

Recognizing the urgency of his situation, the street outreach team immediately submitted a bed request to the Department of Health Services. Within hours, Manuel moved into an emergency shelter. The safety and stability of shelter allowed him to focus on more than surviving another night on the streets. Within weeks, he enrolled in a nursing program, determined to build a better future for himself.

To support him further, our team provided non-perishable groceries, knowing he spent most days searching for work. We also gave him TAP cards so he could travel to school, job interviews, appointments, and other important commitments.

About six weeks after entering shelter, Manuel returned with exciting news. He had officially been accepted into his nursing program.

Today, Manuel has a renewed sense of hope. His journey began he walked into our Center and our team asked, “Is there anything we can do for you?” And then, he said yes. An answer that changed everything for him.
