On a single walk or drive around Los Angeles, it’s visibly evident that unhoused people need our support  – especially our youngest, most vulnerable neighbors. Every night, thousands of young people in our area face the uncertainty and challenges of not having a stable place to call home. But there are concrete ways you can help make a difference in their lives.

1. Treat Those You See with Respect

Homeless youth are first and foremost human beings deserving of dignity and connection. Something as simple as a smile and a “good morning” can remind them that they’re valued members of our community. If you regularly see the same young people, consider taking time to learn their names and stories (while respecting their privacy and boundaries). Many are unaware of available resources – your conversation could be the bridge to life-changing services. Our Drop-In Center in North Hollywood is an invaluable resource to transitional age youth.

2. Donate New Clothing and Personal Hygiene Items

Clean clothes and personal care items aren’t just about physical comfort – they’re essential tools for maintaining dignity and self-worth. Our North Hollywood Drop-In Center accepts new items such as:

  • New underwear and socks
  • Deodorant and toothpaste
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • New casual clothing suitable for job interviews
  • New backpacks and duffel bags

Please note: While the impulse to donate used items is generous, we can only accept new items. This policy helps ensure the health and safety of the youth we serve. Please reach out to us before dropping off items so we can ensure we have enough staff to receive your items.

3. Challenge and Correct Misconceptions

Many myths surround youth homelessness that can prevent young people from seeking or receiving help. Common misconceptions include:

  • “They chose to be homeless”
  • “They are criminals”
  • “They’re addicted to drugs”

The reality is that youth homelessness often results from systemic issues like family conflict, aging out of foster care, LGBTQ+ rejection, or escaping abuse. By educating ourselves and others, we can help create a more understanding and supportive community.

4. Vote and Advocate!

Your voice and vote matter enormously in addressing youth homelessness. Stay informed about local policies that affect homeless youth:

  • Affordable housing initiatives
  • Rent control measures
  • Youth shelter funding
  • Foster care reform
  • Mental health services
  • LGBTQ+ support programs

Attend city council meetings, contact your representatives, and most importantly – vote in every election, especially local ones where your voice has the most impact.

5. Invest in Organizations That Speak to You

Financial support enables organizations like The Village to provide crucial services like:

  • Mental health counseling
  • Education and job training
  • Family reunification services
  • Long-term housing solutions

Even small monthly donations help create sustainable programs that can transform young lives. Consider setting up a recurring donation to support this vital work.

Ending youth homelessness requires a community-wide effort. Every action, no matter how small it might seem, contributes to creating a future where every young person has a safe place to call home.
